LOUTRAKI

On the opposite side of the Corinthian gulf, 17km away from the campsite is Loutraki. This city took its name from its therapeutic springs, known from the ancient times as Therma. A systematic and organised exploitation of the springs did not start before 1847, when the Italian academy announced that the spa-therapy in this area had beneficent results on patients suffering from dermatological and myo-skeletal diseases. Further more, hydrotherapy is advisable to those suffering from calculus, gastrointestinal and liver diseases. During the last decades the renowned "Water of Loutraki" is as good as the famous "Evian" and "Perrier" waters. Today Loutraki offers, apart from its modernised spas, a rich nightlife with numerous restaurants, nightclubs, casino etc. Nearby Loutraki, there are plenty of areas of natural beauty such as Heras Lake, which is connected to the Corinthian gulf by a small channel. It is situated near Heras cape, where there is one of the oldest stone made lighthouses still in use. Heras Cape is at one end of the beautiful Mountains of Geranio, with the Megara at the other end. On these mountains, which rise over Loutraki, one will find a magnificent pine tree forest and many striking monasteries such as the monastery of Saint John the Baptist and on the west side the monastery of Saint Gerasimos where there is a 13m high stone cross.
