ATHENS

Athens, the capital city of Greece with all the facilities, services and transportation one might require, is only 85km away. Further more, this route is in excellent condition and there are frequent time schedules for buses and trains. Athens is one of the most ancient and glorified cities of the world. According to mythology, the founder of the city is Kekrops, thus its first name Kekropia. The name Athens was adopted later on in honour of its patroness, the goddess Athena. The mythical hero and king Theseus made Athens an actual "city - state". The ancient city was constructed on the hills of Pnyka, Nimphon, Philopappou, Arios Pagos, Kolonos and Acropole. Gigantic walls surrounded the acropolis for the protection of the most historical akropole of the world, known simply as Acropolis. Even if it is only for the monuments themselves, which are up in the acropolis, it is worth visiting Athens - the most renowned being Parthenon, the temple of the virgin Athena. Apart from the acropolis, there is Keramikos with its ancient Flea Market, the Prytaneum, the Parliament, the Institution etc. Northwest of the acropolis one will find the Herod Attiko Theatre outside the old walls. This is a stadium with a capacity of 50000 spectators. Below the acropolis there is Plaka, one of the few places of Athens where one can visualise the Athens of the older times, before it became the "cement" city we know today.
