ANCIENT CORINTH

From the campsite, 3,5km away, one can see the impressive Akrokorinth, the acropolis of ancient Korinth, which is built at an altitude of 575m.Situated just below this dignified acropolis, is ancient Korinth. There one can see the remains of an ancient city whose reputation, in those days, had reached the corners of the world. Korinth (which was first known as Ephira) was renowned for its wealth and prosperity, its remarkable products and ceramics, its temples and altars. However, it was most famous for the priestess of the goddess of love, Aphrodite. The most celebrated priestess, of all those who served the numerous temples of both the city and the acrokorinth, was Lais. Nowadays the whole area is practically an enormous museum, where the guests can visit various segments of the buildings of the ancient city. For example, the archaic temple of Apollon with its monolithic pillars, built around the 510bc. There are also segments of the Flea Market, Euriklios Spas, the Theatre (that had a capacity of 15,000 spectators), the Music Theatre, and the Temple of Hera and of Octavia, etc. There are also two springs Peirini and Owl Krini, from where the city got its water supply. Many other findings are kept in the adjacent museum of Ancient Korinth.
